The Elbe Sandstone Mountains – consisting of Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland – are one of the most spectacular landscapes in Europe. The cross-border region is located in the extreme south-east of Germany and the north of Czechia, just a few kilometres from the Saxon capital of Dresden. The landscape fascinates with its rich variety of forms – with table mountains, plateaus, rock reefs, rock needles, gorges, forests and the Elbe Valley. A large part of the approximately 710 square kilometre region with its rich flora and fauna is protected as a national park on both sides of the border. Highlights for cycling include the Elbe Cycle Route, one of Germany's most popular river cycle routes, which passes through one of its most beautiful sections here, and the new RockHead gravel bike route. The 320 km circular route runs along challenging gravel routes in Saxon Switzerland and Upper Lusatia.
